Intensive couples therapy retreat

This page is for couples in acute crisis, couples arriving from outside Sydney, and couples who’ve watched weekly therapy stall. The intensives run one, two, or three days. Compressed, deliberate, designed to move things that weekly sessions cannot.

The discovery just happened. Or the ultimatum just landed. Or you've sat in weekly therapy for a year and watched nothing of significance change.

An intensive couples therapy retreat in Sydney is built for the moment you can't afford to keep waiting between sessions. Couples land here for one of three reasons: a crisis that has to be addressed this week, distance from Sydney that rules out weekly attendance, or a long stretch of standard counselling that hasn't moved the marriage out of its spiral.

Who books an intensive

The couples who book a multi-day intensive are not browsers. They are decision-makers under pressure, and they fall into three groups.

  • The first is couples in acute crisis. The discovery of an affair. An ultimatum issued in the past week. A marriage that has gone from comfortable misery to something neither partner can manage alone.
  • The second is couples from outside Sydney. Interstate, overseas, or far from the Upper North Shore. Weekly attendance is not on the table. A compressed window is.
  • The third is couples who have already tried weekly counselling. Months, sometimes years. The conversation never closes. The same fight runs on a loop. Nothing has moved.

What links them: time pressure, a willingness to commit, and the recognition that drip-fed sessions over a year are not going to get them where they need to be.

Why an intensive couples therapy retreat works when weekly stalls

An intensive couples therapy retreat does something that weekly sessions cannot. It removes the gap.

Weekly therapy gives your nervous system six and a half days to re-armour between sessions.
You walk in raw, work for fifty minutes, walk out, and rebuild your defences before the next appointment. The work doesn’t compound. It just restarts every Tuesday.

An intensive doesn’t allow that. Saturday’s work is still open Sunday morning. The nervous system stays in a state where change is possible for a sustained period. That is the only way some kinds of stuck come unstuck.

Over twenty years specialising in couples, with infidelity recovery and sexless marriages as the two areas where this format moves things most reliably. The intensive is the structure that lets the work land. It’s purpose-built for couples whose marriage cannot wait for the slow drip of weekly sessions.

Three formats. One decisive intervention.

Each couples retreat in Sydney from this practice runs in one of three formats. The structure is the same. The depth of work each allows is different.

One-day intensive

Two-day Intensive

For the 1% of couples who have lost all hope and for whom money is no object.

Three-day intensive

(Your need this only when both partners are serious for outcomes)

“Client satisfaction figures: 100% on one, two and three-day intensive retreat programmes, and 95% on initial two-hour sessions. These are self-reported figures — the same methodology used by Relationships Australia and every major counselling body in the country. The difference is the numbers.”

“Couples travel from the Northern Beaches, from interstate, from New Zealand, and from as far as Botswana and Qatar to work with Michael Myerscough. They do not do that because the website is appealing. They do it because the results travel by word of mouth.”

Booking an intensive

  • Booking an intensive starts with a short conversation, not a checkout button. Multi-day intensives are not visible on the public booking calendar. They are scheduled directly, so I can confirm the format suits your situation and the timing works for both of you.
  • The process is straightforward. Contact the office through the form. We set up a brief discovery call to confirm fit. If the intensive is the right structure, we book and send the intake material. If it isn’t, I’ll tell you what is.
  • Not every couple is a good fit for the intensive format. The discovery call is where we work out whether you are.

Success Stories

Over the last 20 years we've tried so many different ways to improve our relationship. And truth be told I've hated them all. Michael's 2 day Couples Therapy Retreat was different. Very different. He understands that as a guy you just need to tell me what to do and then get me to practice it over and over again until I've got it. At points I felt like he drilled details into me, incredibly though I started using the skills as if they were natural for me. As a result his approach was so much more helpful than any other I've tried. 6 months later, my wife and I are still enjoying the benefits that come from using the new skills Michael has given us. I think we actually love each other more now than when we first met.And - I don't say this lightly - this is a miracle because before working with Michael I was so unhappy I'd decided my best bet was to simply swallow the cost of divorce. It still makes me shudder now to think how close I came to losing my family. If you are considering doing the 2 day intensive, just do it, it gets the job done, fast.

Arthur and Claire*2 Day Intensive

We started out with a one-day intensive following a painful infidelity on my husband's part. I had all but given up hope of us ever reconnecting. With Michael's help we transformed how we communicated and, most importantly, we were able to re-experience the connection and affection that had been lost for years due to my husband's distancing.Three months into our work with Michael, I realised whilst out on a romantic date with my dramatically different husband that we'd become a couple people might observe and envy.
We cannot thank Michael enough for his help during this heartbreaking time in our marriage. I can honestly say we are stronger now than ever before. I would highly recommend Michael to any couple struggling and in desperate need.

Frequently Asked Questions

It’s couples therapy compressed into one, two, or three consecutive days instead of spread across weekly sessions. The point is to remove the gap: weekly therapy gives your nervous system six and a half days to re-armour between appointments, so the work restarts every time. In an intensive, Saturday’s work is still open on Sunday — that continuity is what moves things weekly sessions can’t.

Three groups. Couples in acute crisis (an affair just disclosed, an ultimatum just issued); couples arriving from interstate or overseas for whom weekly attendance isn’t possible; and couples who’ve already spent months or years in weekly counselling with nothing shifting. What links them is time pressure and a genuine willingness to commit.

The one-day is for local couples needing urgent action on an acute situation. The two-day is the most common booking — day one lands the diagnosis and starts the work, day two consolidates and sends you home with a structure; it does the work of around six to nine months of weekly sessions. The three-day is a full rebuild for a specific, smaller set of situations. For most couples, the two-day is the right call.

It starts with a short conversation, not a checkout button — the multi-day intensives aren’t on the public booking calendar. You contact the office through the form, there’s a brief discovery call to confirm the format genuinely fits your situation, and if it does, the booking and intake follow. Not every couple is a good fit for the intensive format, and the call is where that’s worked out.

Because these intensives are premium, prices will be discussed over the discovery call.
