Couples Therapy Assessment in Sydney

This page is for couples who want to start sensibly rather than in free-fall, and for individuals whose partner won’t come yet. The two-hour assessment is the entry point. It’s a real diagnostic, not a get-to-know-you session.

A couples therapy assessment in Sydney should send you home knowing two things: what's going on in your marriage and what to do about it. Most first sessions don't get there. They use the hour on intake forms, history-taking, and the start of a conversation that hasn't found its footing by the time the clock runs out.

The two-hour assessment is built to land both. It's a clinical diagnostic, long enough to see the dynamic rather than just the symptoms, and long enough to start the work on the same day you booked to talk.

"Their whole workout is our warm-up. Why leave when you're finally getting started?"

There are four places to start

Each of the four services on this page suits a different situation.

  • The two-hour couples assessment is for couples who are not in acute crisis. Things are not where you want them. You’re not in free-fall either. You don’t need an emergency intervention. You need to understand what’s wrong so you can decide what to do about it.
  • Clarity Session is for couples who need clarity, not more uncertainty. Over two sessions, you’ll uncover what’s really happening and walk away with a clear answer and your next step.
  • The two-hour follow-up session is for couples continuing after the assessment or after an intensive. It’s the structure that keeps the work from unravelling once you’re back home.
  • The 90-minute individual coaching is for people whose partner won’t come yet. You can’t drag your partner into therapy. You shouldn’t try. What you can do is come alone, work out what’s going on, and start moving in a direction that compels your partner to come along next time. Most people booking individual counselling for relationship issues return with their partner soon after.

Success Stories

In my 1st session with Michael I realised that Michael "got me" like no other professional ever has. Michael pin pointed issues that I have had for more than 50 years that have held me back. He has helped me to improve my life and save our marriage. Even better the work we did was respectful and a lot more entertaining that I would ever have thought possible.
The fact that Michael was able to tactfully work around my wall of resistance to even keep me in the room should be a testimony to his calibre as a therapist. Over the following four months he was able to dissect 12 years of marital dysfunction and elicit practical commitments from both of us to start rewriting our relationship. Michael has the uncanny ability to walk a fine line between empathy and calling you on your shit. If you’re convinced that your marriage is over - give yourself the gift of certainty that you really have tried your best.
If Michael can’t save your marriage then no one can and you can leave with a clear conscious. I promise you he will heal many of your wounds, give you great insight into your negative love patterns and he just might perform a miracle for your marriage.

Frequently Asked Questions

It’s a clinical diagnostic, not a get-to-know-you session. The first hour is both of you describing what you think is happening; the second is where the underlying pattern — the dynamic you can’t see because you’re inside it — gets named. You leave with a written summary of what’s going on and a clear next step, on the same day.

Fifty minutes is built for individual therapy and isn’t long enough for couples work. The first hour is taken up just hearing both sides. The second hour — the part most people have never had access to — is where the real diagnosis happens. Two hours also means the session can be closed properly, so you don’t leave with the lid off and nowhere to put it.

Then come on your own. The 90-minute individual coaching session is built for exactly this — working out your own side of a dynamic you’re both stuck in, and moving in a direction that often brings a reluctant partner along next time. You can’t drag someone into therapy, and you shouldn’t try.

The assessment is the entry point and must come first. The two-hour follow-up sessions are for couples continuing after the assessment or after an intensive — the structure that keeps the work from unravelling once you’re back home. Both run two hours and are clinical and skills-focused.

The two-hour assessment and the individual coaching are both bookable directly through the website — pick a time, complete the intake, and arrive ready to work. Prices are mentioned on the booking page.
